St Albans School has enjoyed its greatest success at Oxbridge entries for over 20 years, with 19 students receiving offers.

The Abbey Gateway school has received 15 offers from Oxford University and four from Cambridge and the subjects that students have chosen to study range from law to engineering, languages, mathematics, economics and history.

Andrew Grant, headmaster at the school, said: "These are the best set of offers we have had in my time at the school. It is a real triumph for the pupils concerned, and for the teachers who have taught and prepared them.

"It includes offers for some of the most competitive course in the country: Economics and Management at Oxford and medicine at both places, for example, and overall the numbers compare well with the days of the old Direct Grant, since when, competition for places at the two universities has increased enormously."
