Keen not to let the floods get in the way of his weekly routine, 72-year-old Richard Whitaker donned his wellies to visit his usual spot on Saturday, where he watched the ducks finally get free roam around Verulamium Park.

This is a photograph sent in to the Review by Mr Whitaker’s granddaughter Kelly Hancock, who was called by her grandfather insisting "not even a little bit of water" would stop him visiting his usual spot on a bench at the city park.

Kelly, of How Wood Park Road, Park Street, said: "He called to tell me nothing stops him from sitting on his bench watching the ducks like he does every week, not even a little bit of water.

"I think he got a bit too comfortable."

For three years, Mr Whittaker of Watford Road, Bricket Wood has been visiting Verulamium Park to watch the ducks.

St Albans & Harpenden Review:

Kelly, a community support manager at St Albans City Youth FC, said: "My sister Lucy works in The Rose and Crown pub, so he often visits her with my mum and then walks along to watch the ducks. They also take the dog down there.

"He wasn’t going to let the floods get in the way."
