St Albans MP Anne Main has been reselected to stand as the Conservative parliamentary candidate in the 2015 General Election.

Local party members have voted for Mrs Main to stand as their candidate in 2015 following a selection meeting on Monday night.

In a statement released by her office, Mrs Main said she is delighted at the decision and hopes to continue the work being done to reduce the deficit, increasing employment, and improving educational opportunities including apprenticeships.

The statement read: "I am delighted to have been re-adopted by the St Albans Conservative Association as their candidate for 2015. I believe in standing up for the people of St Albans and being a strong voice in Westminster, even if that means occasionally sitting on the ‘naughty step’ in Parliament.

"I have never believed in negative campaigning and strongly believe you should judge people on their actions. I have spoken up for the people of St Albans on a wide range of issues including inappropriate development both locally and nationally, supporting local charities on the lobbying bill, and taking a consistent stance against over burdensome EU legislation and a personal commitment to an in-out referendum.

"Whilst it is never easy to stand up to the party whips I believe that St Albans comes first."

The current Conservative incumbent was first elected as the city’s MP in 2005, when she defeated Labour candidate Kerry Pollard. She was then re-elected in 2010.

She added: "There is still a long way to go but I certainly feel that we are turning a corner. I hope to continue the work being done to reduce the deficit, increasing employment, and improving educational opportunities such as apprenticeships, in St Albans and across the country.

"I have met so many great people and organisations during my time as the MP for St Albans and it is an honour to be chosen to fight the 2015 general election and ask for the support of the people of St Albans who it has been my pleasure to serve and whose views I have listened to regardless of political persuasion."
