Pupils at a Harpenden school swapped their traditional uniforms for outfits of their favourite literary characters to mark World Book Day on Thursday.

Peter Pan, Where’s Wally and Katie Morag were among the popular fictional heroes children and staff dressed up as at Sauncey Wood School in Pickford Hill.

Children also enjoyed a special school assembly, where everyone got the chance to admire each others' costumes.

As part of the celebrations, children donated their books to the school’s library.

Rachel Keen, school teacher, said: "We have around 160 pupils at our school and collected around 100 books on the day, which was great.

"Parents came in throughout the day to read books to a small group of children. It was a real community day."

Teachers also combined books with learning when 'Norman The Slug with a Silly Shell' was used to teach children about symmetry.

As if dressing up in school wasn’t enough, the children were also invited back to school in the evening for bedtime stories in their pyjamas to enjoy storytelling and hot chocolate.
