Film goers will have the opportunity to find out about the protection of bees during a movie night in St Albans next month.

The Riverside Streets Community Film Club will be showing the award winning film ‘More Than Honey’ on Saturday, April 12 at 7.30pm in St Albans Sub Aqua Club, Cottonmill Lane.

The film is a reflective and detailed look at the life of honey bees, a creature that appeared on earth 60 million years ago and is now under increasing threat. There will be also be an opportunity to talk to a local beekeeper at the film showing.

The film showing is a collaboration between the Riverside Streets Community Film Club and St Albans Friends of the Earth, who have been campaigning for bees to be protected over the last two years.

Bee populations have been rapidly declining and Friends of the Earth have been asking the Government to draw up a Bee Action Plan to get to the bottom of what is causing the decline and then implement plans to protect bee numbers. This Bee Action Plan, devised by Lord de Mauley, is due to be published soon.

Amanda Yorwerth from St Albans Friends of the Earth, said: "We have found very strong local support for saving bee populations, and people are very keen to help bees and pollinators in their own gardens, and are also asking others and Government to do the same. This film showing comes at a critical time to remind us that bees still need our help."
