A number of projects to commemorate the centenary of the World War One are to take place across the St Albans district.

Exhibitions, research, publications and events are among the many projects discussed at a World War One workshop hosted by St Albans District Council.

These are just some of the ideas, which will be organised by parish councils and district organisations, highlighted at the workshop:

• Walks organised by the City of St Albans Tour Guides to commemorate the start of the war and the armistice agreement.

• Planting of poppy seeds by Colney Heath Parish Council at entry points to the village.

• An exhibition created by the Museum of St Albans about the impact of the war on family and community life and the local economy.

• A parade and tea dance organised by London Colney Parish Council.

• A prayer trail, exhibition, workshops and lecture series organised by St Albans Cathedral.

• A project by St Albans Civic Society to raise awareness of the Verdun Tree at Waxhouse Gate. It was grown from a conker collected from the only tree to survive the 1916 battle at Verdun.

• The University of Hertfordshire’s Remembering the World War One online heritage hub which pools ideas and sources from across the county and beyond.

• An exhibition planned by Harpenden Town Council to coincide with Armed Forces Day 2014.

• The re-publication of a leaflet on the Abbey Street memorials by St Albans and Hertfordshire Architectural and Archaeological Society.

• A Colney Heath Parish Council project involving a local researcher looking at the history of 50 men.

• A memorial book that is being developed by St Michel’s Church, St Albans.
