Now the warmer weather is here, volunteers are preparing to help our feathered friends into spring by putting up new bird boxes in How Wood, a pretty wildlife haven just south of St Albans.
Working with Fircroft Tree Services, a tree surgery company based in nearby Bricket Wood, the Friends of How Wood installed a new tawny owl box and several smaller bird boxes suitable for robins, blue tits and wrens, among others yesterday.
The Friends of How Wood are a group of volunteers, who care for the small woodland, off Grovelands in Park Street.
They meet on a Saturday each month to carry out work to keep the paths open and manage the woodland and pond, aided by Hertfordshire County Council’s Countryside Management Service (CMS). The woodland is owned by St Albans District Council.
Councillor Beric Read, engagement and localism portfolio holder at the council, said: "The district council is very grateful to the volunteers who are contributing their time to put up nesting boxes for birds at How Wood. Volunteers work with CMS on many green spaces across St Albans District, contributing more than 3,700 hours per year and their work is much appreciated."
