Drivers in St Albans are being offered the chance to have their catalytic converters marked for free to deter metal thieves.

The theft of the devices is rising in Hertfordshire, as a result of the high price of some rare metals.

Inspector Paul Lawrence from Hertfordshire Constabulary’s Crime Reduction Unit said: "Forensic marking is very effective at deterring thieves from stealing catalytic converters as they help to trace them to the vehicle they came from and therefore the rightful owner. Catalytic converter theft is still an issue in the county and the cost of replacing one can run into thousands of pounds."

M Wilson Motor Repairs, in Campfield Road will be marking catalytic converters for free, for two weeks from Monday, April 7.

The catalytic converter marking kits have been supplied by the Community Safety Partnership (CSP). The CSP encompasses a number of organisations, including St Albans District Council, Hertfordshire Constabulary and the Hertfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner.
