PLANS for a controversial £40million residential development incorporating a seven-screen cinema in the centre of St Albans will be shown to the public this week.

The scheme, development firm Henry Davidson's second effort after its concept of an eight-storey monolithic block ran into massive opposition last year, will be exhibited at the Town Hall from Thursday to Saturday.

The public are invited to send their views and comments to the district council, which will rule on the firm's planning application in March.

Two separate buildings between Bricket Road and the district council offices would be built on top of an underground car park, and divided by a pedestrianised street.

While the project would answer the demand for a cinema in St Albans, it risks outraging traditionalists who are determined to preserve the city's skyline and architectural character.

The exhibition will be shown again towards the end of January.
