A coffee cart staffed by St Albans volunteers, who want to get back in to work, has launched a six month pilot in the civic centre.

The city’s Mayor, Annie Brewster, sampled the wares of the coffee cart, which is run by Druglink at its official launch on Tuesday, March 25.

Bridget (pictured) has been volunteering with the coffee cart since the project began. Her previous alcohol consumption resulted in her being hospitalised on several occasions and in 2013 she was given just six months to live.

However, in March 2013 she began rehab and is now committed to conquering her addiction. Bridget was referred to Druglink’s Supporting Herts programme and from there was recommended for voluntary work with the coffee cart social enterprise. Through her hard work and commitment Bridget has become a valued member of the coffee team.

The Mayor of St Albans said: “The coffee cart at the Civic Centre is a wonderful example of a social enterprise that benefits a wide range of people. The volunteers gain new skills and experience and any profits are reinvested to help others.

"In addition, customers get a great cup of coffee at a reasonable price. I am very grateful to all those who have organised and support this project, and encourage everyone to come along to drink coffee for a great cause.”

Customers can buy hot and cold beverages, sandwiches and snacks from 8am to 4pm between Monday and Friday.

Every other month the project will hold a charity day, where all proceeds will be donated to a charity chosen by coffee cart customers.
