A 19-year-old man has died after being hit by a train close to Hatfield railway station.

British Transport Police (BTP) officers is appealing for witnesses after Jamie McVeigh of Cloverland, Hatifeld died.

The incident, which is not being treated as suspicious, took place around 8.10am on Wednesday, March 19 in the vicinity of Oxlease Drive about 150 metres from the station.

Paramedics attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detective Sergeant Adrian Naylor said: "This stretch of track is flanked by countryside on either side, which is popular with dog walkers and joggers, so I’m hopeful there might be some witnesses who can help us."

The man is described as white, around 6ft tall and wearing a black jacket, blue jeans and dark trainers.

DS Naylor added: "I would urge anyone who saw anything they think might assist the investigation to come forward. I know it would be of great comfort to his family to have a better understanding of the circumstances surrounding his death."

A report has been prepared for the coroner, who has opened and adjourned an inquest.
