Motorists are facing delays on the M1 following a serious crash near Redbourn.
The motorway is closed northbound between J10 (Luton Airport Spur Road) and J11, A505 (Dunstable), because of an accident involving two lorries and a car.
A man has been airlifted to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel with a serious leg injury following the crash.
Two ambulances, a response car, a duty officer and the Herts Air Ambulance attended the scene.
Diversion are in operation via A1081 and A505 and there is congestion to J7 (Hemel Hempstead).
