Musicians from St Albans School scooped five awards at this year's city Young Musician of the Year competition.

The Jazz Band and Barbershop Group won the awards for Best Secondary Band and Vocal Ensemble respectively, beating the other competitors that had gathered to perform in St Albans Cathedral.

There were also three solo awards including Theo Gill, from 2nd Form, who won the Secondary Strings category, Nicholas Springthorpe from 5th Form, who won the Secondary Voice and Thomas Dilley from 4th Form, who was the winner in the Secondary Wind and Brass category.

This year the competition was judged by Robert Max, a finalist in the BBC competition in 1984.

Mick Stout, music director at the school, said: "It was a fantastic day. Such a range of awards shows the strength of our pupils’ talents and the variety of music being taught at the school.

"To win five awards and all but one of the categories that we entered was a wonderful achievement and should act as a great fillip to all of those that were successful."
