A newly unveiled community mural on a cycle path in St Albans has been defaced.

The street art in Alban Way has been emblazoned with the words ‘lemon’ and ‘dom set’ in graffiti, only a few days after its official unveiling on April 19.

The mural was organised by young people from the Cunningham Hub Youth Café, who collected and created ideas for the tunnel under London Road.

Peter Wares, a Verluamium Park consultative forum member and Ramsbury Road resident, said he is saddened by the defacing of the 'bright and cheerful murals'.

He said: "Having contributed ideas for content of the murals during an open day last month, I am not only saddened by this act, but also disappointed that more had not been done with the murals to commemorate the fact that former six mile Hatfield to St Albans branch line will next year be celebrating its 150th anniversary."

Alban Way is a six and half mile trail for walkers and cyclists that links St Albans with Hatfield.
