A baby dove had to be rescued from a barn roof at a Welwyn Garden City supermarket after getting stuck in netting.

The RSPCA were called to to Tescos at Hydeway in on Wednesday morning after staff reported that a young collared dove had got caught.

The bird had been nesting under the barn roof which was two storeys high. He was trapped by his legs and dangling. He was clearly distressed and flapping his wings so would not have been able to free himself without help.

Kate Wright, RSPCA Animal Collection officer, said: "Who knows what would have happened to this little bird had the staff not spotted him and called us.

"He was very little and probably recently fledged. The parent doves were very concerned and kept coming over to the stuck fledgling in an anxious way.

"They get into the nest through a missing roof panel of which a few are missing but obviously the youngsters are not to sure how to get in and out.

"The young dove was exhausted and had a graze around its neck from the netting but is now recovering well at a nearby wildlife hospital and we should be able to release him back to the wild soon."
