Major road works, which took place on a street in St Albans, have kept residents up until the early hours of the morning.
Carriageway resurfacing was carried out in Sandpit Lane last week by Hertfordshire County Council contractors, which were scheduled to take place until 11pm.
However Stuart Taylor of Culver Road said the sounds of "thumping and scraping" on Monday and Tuesday night has kept him up until past midnight.
The 38-year-old said: "It is quite noisy. Sometimes it is thumping noises, other times scraping. The thumping noises make bottles in my house rattle.
"It is quite strange behaviour for workmen to be out until past 12pm. I can imagine it being pretty bad for people who have kids- it would probably keep them up at night."
Simon Hoggett from Hertfordshire County Council said the resurfacing work was part of the county council's "on-going commitment to maintain and improve roads for the benefit of all road users in Hertfordshire. "
He said: "Our contactors managed to complete all work that was likely to generate high levels of noise before 11pm but it is inevitable that on occasions a certain amount of noise will be generated during night working. We apologise for this and thank residents for their patience."
