A St Albans woman is set to take part in the Bupa London 10,000 run to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, a charity close to her heart.

Megan Barnes, 26, will join thousands of runners at the event in St James Park this Sunday.

She said: “I was one of those people who never imagined something as big as cancer would affect anyone close to me.

“In the last two years a number of people close to me, including my mum, have been affected by cancer and I have witnessed first-hand the amazing care and dedication of Macmillan.

She continued: “The support from family and friends was, and has been overwhelming, and it was great to know Macmillan nurses were a call away if you needed them, for support, help or even just a chat. I like keeping fit and being able to raise money for such a great cause that helps people affected by cancer is amazing.”

Ms Barnes works for National Grid, who’s chosen charity partner is Macmillan. They are pledging to raise £500,000 for people affected by cancer.

She added: “I will be supporting my Company's pledge and will be helping to raise as much money as possible along the way.”

So far the funds Ms Barnes has raised could fund a Macmillan Nurse for over 21 hours, meaning that someone living with cancer could be pain free for this amount of time.

Kerry Cunnane, Hertfordshire fundraising Manager said: “The funds that Megan has raised from taking part in this event will make sure that no one faces cancer alone. Macmillan are there to help people diagnosed with cancer and their friends and family. We all wish Megan the best of luck and thank her for supporting Macmillan Cancer Support.”
