The third Great British Tennis Weekend swung into St Albans and Harpenden with more than 300 people taking to the courts for free tennis activities across the weekend.

With tennis fever sweeping the nation at the mid-way point in The Wimbledon Championships, people across St Albans and Harpenden took to the courts to play tennis for free as part of the LTA’s third Great British Tennis Weekend.

The Mayor of St Albans, Geoff Harrison demonstrated his tennis skills at the event in Verulamium Park, which was one of six community venues providing free tennis activities across the district.

The other venues were: Batchwood Sports Centre, Clarence Park, Harpenden Sports Centre, London Colney Recreation Centre and Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre.

Leo Tutt, LTA Regional Tennis Participation Manager, said: “It was great to see so many people across St Albans and Harpenden, especially families, picking up a racket and getting involved. These weekends are about inspiring more local people to experience our fantastic sport and we certainly achieved that objective.

“Many of the participants had never picked up a racket before but were quickly engaged in and fully enjoying the tennis activities on offer.”

The final Great British Tennis Weekend of this summer takes place on Saturday, July 19 and Sunday, July 20 when more free tennis will be available across the district.
