Memorials to men who died in the First World War have been restored ready for the centenary of the war’s outbreak.

It included re-engraving some and re-repainting all the names of more than 600 local men who died in the war, onto the memorial in St Peter’s Street.

Memorial plaques in the High Street and Verulam Road have also been cleaned and re-pointed.

This work is part of a project to renovate and restore war memorials in St Albans as organised and funded by St Albans District Council out of the budget for the City Neighbourhoods Committee.

Last year the St Peter’s Street war memorial was cleaned and re-pointed and the names of those who died in the Second World War were also re-engraved round the base. First World War memorial plaques in Holywell Hill and Ridgmont Road have also been renovated.

Further work is also planned to extend the paved area in front of the St Peter’s Street war memorial, as requested by the Royal British Legion to allow for the safe and proper raising of their standard at the annual November Remembrance Day commemoration. The work is expected to be completed by November this year.t Peter’s Street.
