A city centre road in St Albans will be closed for eight days to complete a £45,000 resurfacing scheme.

Work will begin on A5183 High Street and George Street on Monday, August 4.

The resurfacing will be carried out in High Street between junctions with Chequers Street and Verulam Road, and on George Street between junctions with A5183 High Street and Spicers Street.

The works will take place under a full road closure, with access maintained for residents and customers.

The closure times vary from day to day, but the project - to be carried out by Eurovia on behalf of Hertfordshire County Council - is expected to be completed within seven days.

Terry Douris, cabinet member for Highways, said: "These works form part of Hertfordshire County Council's on-going commitment to maintain and improve our roads for the benefit of all road users in Hertfordshire.

"We understand that these works are likely to cause a degree of inconvenience to road users. We apologise for this and would ask everyone for their co-operation while the work is in progress."

Any changes to the proposed start date, duration or working hours will be announced on the information boards on site and will be available at www.hertfordshire.roadworks.org.

The closure times for the first week are 9.30am to 7pm on Monday, August 4, 7am to 7pm on the Tuesday and Wednesday and 24 hours on the Thursday and Friday.

On Saturday the road will re-open at 7am.

But the following Monday, August 11, and Tuesday, August 12, the road will be closed from 7am to 7pm.
