The pavement area in Verulamium Park by the side of the River Ver and near Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans has been restored to its former glory.

Missing York stone slabs were replaced, old slabs re-laid and granite stone edging re-instated on the embankment to fully restore the path.

St Albans Council has also recently cleaned and re-pointed St Albans City’s First World War memorial plaques in the High Street and Verulam Road.

The names of local men who died in the war have also been re-engraved on the St Peter’s Street war memorial.

Further work is being undertaken at Clarence Park where new fencing is being erected along part of Hatfield Road and Clarence Lodge will shortly be refurbished.

Councillor Brian Ellis, portfolio holder for housing, said: "The council is delivering an ongoing programme of investment in its property and parks with many projects being undertaken at any one time.

"The paved area near the weir in Verulamium Park is one of these projects. It is now much improved, with missing York stone slabs replaced and the granite edging along the river reinstated."

Other maintenance projects this year include:
•    The restoration of the façade of a building in Market Place, St Albans.
•    Repairs to the road and paths at Hatfield Road Cemetery.
•    The replacement of the spa pool at Harpenden Swimming Pool.
•    The replacement of air conditioning units at Harpenden Sports Centre.
•    The refurbishment of the foyer of the Civic Centre, St Peter’s Street, St Albans.
