Police investigating a car crash which claimed the life of an 83-year-old man near Wheathampstead on Saturday are appealing for witnesses to come forward with information. 

The collision occurred on the B653 Marford Road shortly before 11am, when a blue Ford Fiesta was travelling eastbound and passing through a slight right-hand bend near to the junction with Waterend Lane. 

The driver has failed to negotiate the bend, veered onto the left side verge and collided with a tree. 

The man, an 83-year-old from Hatfield was pronounced dead at the scene. At this stage no other vehicles are thought to have been involved and no one else was hurt. 

PC Bob Hauxwell, who is investigating the collision, said: "I would like to speak to anyone who saw the crash or anyone who saw the Fiesta driving on the road in the moments before the collision occurred. Your information may help us piece together the circumstances of the collision."
