A school in St Albans has started work on a £3.3 million expansion of facilities to accommodate additional students from September 2015.

The development at Sandringham School includes a new 15 classroom block for mathematics, science and computing science, extension to the dining facilities, new offices and library space, expansion of the school hall and a new music room.

Car parking will also be increased together with new cycle storage.

The expansion is part of a programme to continue the improvements to the campus at Sandringham and to accommodate an increase in roll at the request of Hertfordshire County Council.

The school has changed its admissions rules from September 2015, increasing the number admitted to 210 per year including up to 25 reserved for children from the parish of Wheathampstead.

Headteacher Alan Gray said this is the third phase of the planned development of the site, following from the expansion of the sixth form accommodation in 2012 and the opening of the new sports complex in 2014.

He said: "The work will make another significant difference to the quality of the learning environment for current and new students, and ensure that the school offers the highest quality education possible for local people."

The work will be completed in July 2015, ready to accept additional children to the school.
