The official opening of a new footbridge into Blackgreen Wood has taken place.

Members of St Stephen Parish Council’s trees and woodlands committee were joined by Mike Harris from Lafarge Tarmac for the official opening of the new footbridge.

The new bridge, built with the help of a grant from Lafarge Tarmac, provides safe access for residents and visitors into Blackgreen Wood from Park Street Lane.

Prior to the building of the bridge a wide ditch prevented access to the woodland from Park Street Lane and the nearest access point was in Lye Lane.

Councillor John Bell, chairman of the trees and woodlands committee, said: "It is great to have this footbridge in at last - it has opened up this side of the woodland and made the wood as a whole much more accessible to residents and visitors."

A woodlands open day is being held on Saturday, September 13 in Blackgreen Wood when a team of heavy horses will be hauling felled timber to a mobile saw mill operating in the wood.

The day runs from 11am until 4pm.
