A man arrested after a large haul of war munitions was found in St Albans said he is “devastated that part of my life’s work has been destroyed”.

Alan Tissington was arrested last week after police seized a collection of World War One and Two rifles, mortar shells, guns, ammunition and hand grenades at a garage in Windmill Avenue.

Mr Tissington posted a message on his Facebook page over the weekend. He said: “Guys, just wanted to say a massive thank you to all who have send kind words and well wishes, it is greatly appreciated.

“Those of you that know me know I am passionate about military history and militaria, which started at the age of seven.

“I am devastated that part of my life’s work has now been destroyed, bearing in mind that the vast majority was purchased at respected militaria fairs and eBay.

“I would like to thank Hertfordshire police force, who have been absolutely amazing to myself and my family at this very stressful time.”

On Wednesday, four houses were evacuated after police arrested Tissington on suspicion of theft from heritage and protected sites – including the former Prisoner Of War camp at Batford in Harpenden.

He has been bailed until November.
