All lines have reopened after the body of a woman was found on the railway line between Harpenden and St Albans.

British Transport Police were called at just after 6.45am to reports of a body near to Ronsons Way, St Albans.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. One ambulance and two rapid response vehicles attended.

There were delays of up to 45 minutes while emergency services attended the incident. 

Katherine Cox, spokesman for Govia Thameslink Railway, said: "At 6.55am this morning all lines were closed due to reports of a body on the line between Harpenden and St Albans, emergency services attended the scene.

"At 7.10am we were able to run services on the fast line in both directions."

Kit Bradshaw said on behalf of British Transport Police: "Colleagues from Hertfordshire Constabulary and East of England Ambulance Service also attended, and discovered the body of a woman.

"Enquiries are continuing to establish the identity of the deceased and the circumstances leading up to their death.

"The incident is currently being treated as unexplained."
