Green-fingered school children have been honoured for their success in the District Schools in Bloom 2014 Competition.

At the awards ceremony this month Councillor Geoff Harrison, Mayor of St Albans, presented prizes and certificates to the winners and highly commended schools.

Eight local schools produced colourful and imaginative entries for the annual competition, organised by St Albans District Council.

SS Alban & Stephen Infant School win the Fabulous Flowers category, Wheatfields Infants & Junior School won the Vibrant Vegetables category, Roundwood Primary School win the Wonderful Wildlife category and Watling View School triumphed in the Radical Recycling category.

Mayor Harrison said: "The children and their teachers have all worked very hard to produce these excellent results. They can be very proud of what they have created.

"The competition was designed to help teachers deliver part of the KS1 and KS2 curriculum and I hope the children continue to enjoy the skills they have learned. On behalf of the city and district, I offer all the entrants my heartiest congratulations."

One of the competition’s judges was Kate Gould, an award-winning garden designer who is a regular exhibitor at the Chelsea Flower Show.
