The Harpenden Cadet unit of St John Ambulance held an open day at the weekend to mark the 80th anniversary of the organisation's presence in the town.

The first aid charity held the event at Harpenden Fire Station in Leyton Road. Members of the public were taught essential first aid skills with St John Ambulance volunteers and cadets - who created fake wounds and bandaged them for visitors.

There was also a resuscitation station, where two manikins were available for visitors to learn how to undertake compression-only Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation.

Brian Heron-Edmends, St John Ambulance district manager with responsibility for Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, said: "What is really good news is that the Harpenden Cadet unit is now 30-strong with a waiting list.

"All these Cadets are receiving first aid training which means that they have the skills to be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.

"One of them is also going to become a youth leader, which is a great example of leadership development.

"Finally, we'd like to offer our sincere thanks to everyone who participated in the day and to members of the public for their kind donations."
