A school in Markyate has turned over a new leaf - and established a forest school within a dedicated area of woodland.

Beechwood Park School has just established the concept, which originated in Scandinavia and aims to give children an appreciation of the natural environment.

Pupils in reception through to year two started the sessions last week, learning about nature, how to handle risks and to use their own initiative to solve problems and co-operate with others.

Typical activities will include building shelters, collecting firewood, finding treasure and learning about the diversity and identification of species and to respect the environment.
