A lost Chihuahua discovered by police officers in St Albans had travelled nine miles from its home in Hemel Hempstead.

PCs Ben Kirby and Barry Eldridge and PCSO Lewis Griffiths came across the dog in Ashley Road at 5.45pm yesterday.

The dog ran into the Evans Halshaw car park and after a search was found hiding by the officers with help from members of the public and staff from the garage.

The officers brought the dog back to St Albans Police Station where she had her chip scanned.

PCSO Lewis Griffiths said: "It turned out that the dog, named Saffy, had been missing from the Grove Hill area of Hemel Hempstead since Thursday and had somehow made it all the way to St Albans.

"Saffy looked very nervous but otherwise in a remarkably healthy condition. Her owners, a family with two young children, who adopted Saffy in September, were overjoyed when told the news that their dog was found and quickly came to collect her from the station."
