Work has started on the ground and lower floors of the Civic Centre in St Albans which is being converted to accomodate the police after they move from the station in Victoria Street.
Councillor Beric Read, Portfolio Holder for Community Engagement and Localism at St Albans City Council, said: "Hertfordshire Constabulary will be joining the council and other partners at the Civic Centre in the new year.
"Building works are underway and the police are creating a secure compound for their operational vehicles in Bricket Road Car Park.
"There will still be public parking in Bricket Road car park but there will be some disruption while the building works take place. In the longer term, we are working to create more parking spaces in the city centre."
Hertfordshire Constabulary’s St Albans Safer Neighbourhood Teams, Intervention, Local Crime Unit and Community Safety Unit will be moving to the Civic Centre in the spring.
A Police Advice and Information Point is already up and running and is provided in partnership with the council.
