More than 200 guns have been handed over to police in Hertfordshire during a two-week amnesty.

The campaign encouraged people to surrender illegal, real, fake, toy or antique firearms and ammunition to forces across the country.

Hertfordshire Constabulary received a total of 223 guns and 3 crossbows from 141 separate surrenders, in the first amnesty in 11 years. In St Albans, ten weapons were handed over.

Chief Inspector for St Albans Ken Townsend said: "The number of firearms surrendered in St Albans was low compared to other parts of the county and is what was expected really. St Albans is a very safe area with very little gun crime.

"However, I believe that the residents fully engaged in the exercise and will feel reassured that we have taken part, along with other forces, to make this county and neighbouring counties safer places to live."

A variety of firearms were given up, including handguns, rifles, shotguns, air weapons and imitation weapons as well as more than 4,000 calibres of ammunition.

London Colney Labour councillor Jacob Quagliozzi said: "It's troubling that a number of firearms were in public circulation however I pay tribute to Herts constabulary for running the amnesty, a positive and successful campaign which will increase public safety. What we all want is firearms to be removed from the street so that they are not used in criminality.

"Gun crime is relatively low across Herts and in St Albans, and it's a positive step that residents have used this opportunity to safely dispose of firearms which will increase the safety of residents."

Stevenage recouped the highest amount with 66 weapons handed in.

Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate Sandy Walkington said: "Gun crime is not part of everyday life in Hertfordshire, thank goodness, but the open carrying of guns by police at airports and significant events gives food for thought.

"The world is changing. Ten guns handed in means less chance of a horrible accident. And the voluntary nature of the amnesty also speaks volumes about UK culture and values."
