The achievements of students at St Albans School have been judged "exceptional" following an inspection by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI).

ISI praises not only the pupils’ academic prowess but also their extra-curricular achievements and their strong personal qualities that contribute to "excellent attitudes to learning".

The ISI inspection model differs from an Ofsted inspection in that it does not give an overall grading for the school but makes judgements on a four-point scale (excellent, good, sound, unsatisfactory) on eight aspects of the school’s work. In the area of "achievement", the judgement "exceptional" can be given where inspection evidence indicates performance in the upper reaches of the "excellent" category.

The school also attained the highest grade for curricular and extra-curricular provision; contribution of teaching; spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils; pastoral care; and welfare, health and safety.

Headteacher Jonathan Gillespie said he took pride in the knowledge of having a world-class school at the heart of the city.

He said: "Our pupils, their parents, our teachers and indeed the whole St Albans community should be proud of this report and of the inspirational teaching and exceptional achievements both in and beyond the classroom that were highlighted by the inspectors."

The achievements of pupils across all ages were recognised, the boys and girls being praised for their exemplary behaviour and co-operative approach to learning. The report also highlighted the pupils’ engagement with - and contribution to - the local community and said: "The many opportunities provided for them to make valuable contributions to their school, the local community and charity work allows them to develop strong social, moral and cultural awareness and an understanding of the value of service to others."

The pupils’ "strong commitment of service to the local community" was highlighted in respect of the school’s partnership scheme with nearby schools.

Mr Gillespie added: "For me the report only adds to the keen sense of the pride I feel in leading such an outstanding school."
