Ten soldiers from Wheathamsptead have finally been remembered in a war memorial thanks to the effort of two villagers.

Five years ago Terry and Margaret Pankhurst began to research the names on Wheathampstead’s war memorial, and last year they published the stories of the men who died in both world wars in a book titled "More Than Just a Name".

During the research they discovered that ten names had been omitted from the memorial. Terry and Margaret were determined that those missing from the memorial should not be forgotten, and they set about fundraising and arranging for the names to be added in time for this year’s Remembrance Day service. After discussion with the church authorities they received approval and the names were duly added.

David Johnston, Chairman of the Parish Council said: "Terry and Margaret have done all of this, not for gain, but because they felt it was the right thing to do."

St Helen’s Church arranged for children to make giant poppies - one for each of the fallen - and these became the centre piece for the Remembrance Day celebration on November 9.

With the names on the newly cleaned memorial now complete and the giant poppies looking on, the village was able for the first time to gather round the war memorial to recognise all of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
