A Harpenden mum has become an internet sensation with a unique fundraising challenge to wear a new charity shop outfit every day this year in honour of her late mother who died of breast cancer.

Caroline Jones, 46, is raising money in memory of her mother Mary Benson, who passed away in October.

The 72-year-old had suffered a long battle with breast cancer and died after two years of chemotherapy.

Caroline will wear only "pre-loved" clothes for the whole of 2015 - with a new outfit every day from the Cancer Research UK shop in Harpenden's High Street where her mother volunteered for 13 years.

The mother-of-three who lives in Carisbrooke Road will take daily pictures of her outfits to try and promote the shop and raise money for the charity.

She said: "I love fashion. My mum loved fashion. Together we went shopping, we talked style, we noted seasonal trends, and we fell about laughing in mirrored changing rooms often dealing with a zip issue. Fashion was one of the many things that tied us together.

"Now there is no 'we'. I have decided to celebrate my mum's life through the fashion lens, in a way I know she would have thoroughly enjoyed.

"The gap can never be filled and my aching is constant. "The reason I started doing this is because I wanted something to focus on this year and I wanted to do something for Cancer Research."

Caroline, who also runs a pop-up disco, will not buy anything new for the next 12 months with the only thing that is not second hand being her underwear.

With the help of her three children Mary, 11, Connie, 9, and Matthew, 7, Caroline plans her outfit the night before depending on the day ahead. To date, she has shared pictures wearing labels such as Laura Ashley, Zara, M&S, ASOS, Gap, and Lyle & Scott - which has promted comments from strangers who are inspired by her campaign.

The Cancer Research UK shop where Caroline volunteers one a week is one of 570 shops in the UK and helps to fund the charity's ground-breaking work into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

As well as raising money through buying the clothes and donations from those who like her daily picture, Caroline hopes her quest will encourage others to visit charity shops and persuade people to wear second hand clothes.

She added: "Yes, charity shop clothes can sometimes smell, have a few holes, need the odd button sewing on, but so what. They are there to be re-cleaned, re-worn, re-loved, re-shared, re-enjoyed and re-invented.

"The response has been incredible and quite frankly overwhelming. The shop has told me it is already getting new customers who have seen my Facebook page.

"People say getting my picture is inspiring them."

Less than two weeks into her fundraising Caroline has already raised more than £1,500 for Cancer Research UK and recieved more than 4,000 on her Facebook page.
