A cardiac support group which covers the St Albans, Harpenden, Welwyn Garden City and Hatfield area has welcomed their 1000th member.

Hertbeats began when a few people coming out of 'cardiac rehab' 17 years ago wanted to continue to exercise, support one another and help those with heart problems.

Mr Bill Rix is Hertbeats 1000th member. Just like playing cricket for England, each new member is given a number when he or she joins.

Brian York, chairman, said: "It is amazing how our voluntary organisation has grown from such humble beginning of a few people coming together in St Albans City Hospital.

"Our overriding aim is to give support through information and advice to cardiac patients and their families.

"But we also produce a regular newsletter, run eight exercise classes (including four in the hospital gym) each week, have a golf section, run monthly trips to places of interest like Bletchley Park and theatres, and have regular monthly meetings ranging from discussion with our cardiologists to learning more about the First World War."
