A student from St Albans spent a day with acclaimed designer, Wayne Hemingway MBE, after impressing him with her mug art.

Monica Kessler, 21, entered a competition hosted by her accommodation provider, Unite Students, which asked residents to decorate mugs.

The Mathematics and Education student at Sheffield Hallam University, who won the competition, tweeted her designs, which caught the eye of the Red or Dead founder.

Mr Hemingway said: "You could tell with just one look that Monica had talent for illustration and slogans.

"After designing a set of four mugs, it was great to see her parked in front of a computer at our design studio, glued to our design team who were helping her bring the designs life."

Ms Kessler's decorated mugs will now be developed by Hemingway Design in Wembley and will become a limited edition product.

She said: "I entered the competition for fun, as it was a great way to be able to express my creative side while on a Maths course.

"I wanted to make the designs worthy of winning, but I was still very surprised and happy to hear that my entries actually won. I can't wait to show them to people and say - look, I made these."
