The number of young people in Hertfordshire not in education, employment or training is at a record low.

Government figures have shown the county’s NEET rate is 3.8 per cent – compared to a national average of 4.7 per cent.

Since January the Hertfordshire rate has fallen further to a record low of 3.5 per cent.

Chris Hayward, cabinet member for Enterprise, Education and Skills, praised the work of the authority’s Youth Connexions, which supports young people with their progression into education, employment or training.

He said: "This is a major milestone in our target to achieve a higher proportion of young people in education or training and to support their transition into the world of work.

"This excellent figure is a reflection of the commitment of Youth Connexions staff and our partners in aiming for the best possible opportunities for Hertfordshire’s young people."

Youth Connexions works with schools, colleges and employers to deliver careers guidance and work-related learning. They also provide a free employment service for 16-19 year olds sourcing vacancies, identifying apprenticeships and developing the skills of young people to be ready for work.

Advisers contact young people to track their progress and ensure that support is given when it is needed. Currently the service has contact with 97 per cent of 16-19 year olds in the county.
