A train passenger has been arrested after he refused to pay for a ticket and assaulted a member of staff this morning.

A spokesman for British Transport Police confirmed that officers were called to St Albans City station at 8am after reports of a passenger without a ticket refusing to co-operate with rail staff.

Kit Bradshaw said: “Prior to our arrival we received a further report that a passenger had assaulted staff and been detained by an off-duty police officer.

“A 25-year-old man, from Lewisham, was arrested on suspicion of two assaults and assaulting a police officer. Enquiries are ongoing.”
