A 95-year-old woman from London Colney died from injuries sustained after falling out of bed, an inquest heard.

Florence Johnson, 95, of Willowside, London Colney, died at Watford General Hospital on Sunday, August 17, 2014, after suffering head injuries as a result of falling out of bed the previous day.

Edward Thomas, coroner at Hertfordshire Coroner’s Court, said paramedics and staff at the Vicarage Road hospital had suspected Ms Johnson was suffering from a stroke at the time, but this was ruled out once further tests were carried out.

But the court heard that hospital staff said it "was felt it was unlikely she would be put in palliative care" because her condition was deteriorating.

The post-mortem tests carried out revealed she had suffered from an intracranial haemorrhage, which the court heard can occur as a result of a bad head injury and Mr Thomas said the evidence was consistent with this theory.

The death was ruled as an accidental.
