One of the city’s most popular musicians has died.

Tributes have been paid to singer-songwriter Pete Waters, who died last Wednesday following treatment for a brain tumour.

The 57-year-old worked all over the world as a musician, and played most of the music venues in and around St Albans including The Acorn, The Goat, The Robin Hood, The Garibaldi, The White Lion, The Rats Castle, The Farmers Boy and the Horn of Plenty.

The musician's parents were from County Wexford in Ireland, but Mr Waters lived most of his life in St Albans.

In 1987, the singer returned from Australia and with his music partner, Bruce 'Brewster' Fursman, formed a duo called 'The Coulin' who released a single 'Songs from Afar'.

In the early 1990s Mr Waters formed what would be his most well-known band, 'The Plastic Paddys' who toured extensively in the UK.

Mr Waters was also the promoter of a music venue in London Colney called 'The Big Gig'.

In 2007, he released an album of his own songs which he showcased in February 2008 at the Maltings Arts Theatre.

In the audience at that concert was Christiane Kubrick - the wife of the late international film director Stanley Kubrick - who booked Pete and his band to play at her annual arts festival just outside St Albans.

Mr Waters (pictured below) also travelled to India a few years ago and on his return organised annual charity gigs for the street children he met while out there.

In recent years, the singer teamed up with the veteran musician 'Wild Willy' Barrett to perform gigs both in the UK and abroad.

As well as being a prolific songwriter, singer and musician, Mr Waters also held a degree in Irish and Spanish as well as being a fully qualified Gas Safe engineer and English teacher in Thailand.

Reacting to news of Mr Waters death on Facebook, Tim Smith said: “A man with a social conscience, an intellect that challenged and a Celtic spirit.

“St Albans has lost a part of its cultural tapestry and is a poorer place without him. All round good guy, a great loss.”

Hannah Bayer said: “What a positive and lovely man with a beautiful voice and an even more beautiful heart.

“I'll miss you my dear friend. Hopefully you are at peace up there, with that sweet smile, strumming your guitar.”

Mr Waters’ funeral will take place on Tuesday, June 23 at the West Herts Crematorium.
