Cricket players from St Albans stepped up the crease to raise more than £14,000 for charity by holding a cricket match.

St Albans Cricket Club hosted the event on Sunday in memory of the club's former chairman Phil Milton, who lost his battle with cancer aged 55 in November 2011.

More than 1,000 people showed up to the 45-over match, played by a number of celebrities from the world of sport including retired international footballer David James (pictured below), Devon Malcolm, a former England Cricketer (pictured below) and Mick Harford, a former Luton Town and England Footballer.

St Albans & Harpenden Review:

The day was organised by the two Cricket clubs Phil Milton had been the chairman of, St John Fisher CC and St Albans CC.

Player and organiser from Fisher's, John Herbert, said of the day: "The event went better than we could have hoped for.

"The weather was perfect, the pro’s couldn’t have been more helpful or friendly and they interacted with the crowd at every opportunity.

"The food and drink concessions, Hansons Catering, Cafe2U, The Beer Shop and the India Garden worked hard and kept everyone refreshed and both bands [An Absoloute Shambles and Katies Jumping Fleas] were highly entertaining."

The Phil Milton XI eventually won the game by 26 runs.

Phil’s Son Kevin was one of the captains for the Phil Milton Invitational XI and his daughter Sarah gave a speech at the end of the event thanking everyone on behalf of the family.

She gave an insight to who he was and what he meant to everyone close to him.

Mr Herbert added: "At the last count we have raised £14,033.98, considering our initial target was £3k we are over the moon.

"It was amazing how generous and supportive a number of local companies and individuals have been.

"Special thanks need to go to Luton Town FC who were our unofficial supporters.

"A number of their staff and management gave up their time on the day to help the event run smoothly and without their event management experience we would never had the level of success we achieved."

All proceeds will go towards the services of Peace Hospice Care.
