A hoax call reporting a blaze at St Albans Tesco last night risked lives, said a fire chief.

Two engines raced with blue lights to respond to the call reporting a fire at the supermarket in St Peters Street.

St Albans station manager Lee Crake said: “This call put other lives at risk. Drivers were put at risk as we responded with blue lights and at speed to get to the scene and for other people who might have needed us during the time we were tied up dealing with this hoax.”

The call is thought to have been made from a payphone close to the Tesco store.
