World War II veterans gathered in St Albans to mark the 70th anniversary of VJ Day.

While the war ended in Europe in May 1945, the conflict raged on for another three months in the Far East before Japanese forces finally surrendered on August 14.

The following day was celebrated as Victory over Japan Day.

Among those present at the Jersey Farm event organised by the British Legion on Sunday were the Mayor of St Albans cllr Salih Gaygusuz, Sandridge Parish and Harpenden Councillors and members of the public.

Cllr Gaygusuz lay a wreath on behalf of the of city while the Reverend Em Coley of St Leonard Church conducted the service.

The Salvation Army and musicians from the Spicer Street Church provided the last post music.

The standards proudly displayed by the Royal British Legion, The Burma Star Association, The Korean Veterans Association, L.S.T and Landing Craft Association, REME, RAF Associations.

It is estimated that seventy one thousand people from Britain, and the Commonwealth countries were the casualties of the war against Japan - 12,000 were prisoners of war who died in Japan.

Don Dell from the Royal British Legion read the exhortation: “They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.”
