A free number plate security event will be held in the district for drivers looking to make their vehicles more secure.

Due to the high number of plates stolen from vehicles last year, police have upped their number plate security operations during 2015.

Organised by Hertfordshire Constabulary, drivers can visit Sainsbury's car park in Colney Fields, Harpenden Swimming Pool car park in Amenbury Lane or Sainsbury's car park in Griffiths Wat between 10am and midday on Sunday.

Harpenden Safer Neighbourhood Team Sergeant Tom Fisher and his colleagues will be fitting the screws.

Sergeant Fisher said: “We’d urge people to come along and take the opportunity to have their number plates secured with these screws.

“Theft of your car number plates can be very inconvenient and they can be used for criminal offences including bilking (stealing petrol), evading speed camera fines or avoiding the congestion charges in London.

"To help keep yours safe, why not come along and spend a few minutes securing your number plates. We’ll also be providing crime prevention advice about how to keep your vehicle secure.”

The event is being organised by St Albans Community Safety Partnership.
