Residents in the city are being asked to stay away from a sinkhole in Fontmell Close while work continues to fill it.

Hertfordshire County Council has issued the plea as work nears completion.

Tom Shipp said on behalf of the council: "We know there has been a great deal of interest in the sinkhole.

"However, only approved contractors and emergency access to the site is possible so we would encourage people to stay away."

The 66ft (20m) wide and 33ft (10m) deep crater opened up across gardens and driveways in Fontmell Close last week.

By the end of yesterday, engineers have pumped in 535m3 of foamed concrete into the 10m hole.

Contractors are now monitoring the concrete while it dries to ensure this level remains stable.

The temporary access road behind the site is for site vehicles and emergency access only.

A private security firm continues to keep and eye on homes in Fontmell Close and Bridle Close.
