A driver who suffered horrific burns in a road crash admitted causing the death of a motorbike rider from St Albans.

Slavika Mileva, 31, of Oakridge Avenue, Radlett, pleaded guilty this morning to causing the death by careless driving of Joe Paul on Thursday, June 10 last year.

She was driving a black Mercedes SLK that collided with Mr Paul's red Honda motorcycle in Watling Street at ten to seven in the evening.

A 33-year-old Watford man was also taken to hospital after pulling both Mileva and Mr Paul away from the burning vehicles.

Mr Paul, 27, who had a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Leeds University, worked for Transport for London and was aiming to become a Chartered Engineer.

Judge Andrew Bright QC decided Mileva’s sentencing would be adjourned to next month.

He said: “Ms Mileva was charged with causing death by careless driving, not by dangerous driving, so this needs to be flagged up – sentencing is more limited if the driving had been dangerous.”

Mileva was in a critical but stable condition following the crash and Judge Bright added that in order to determine her sentence he would need to review her medical records related to the case.

He said: “She suffered very severe injuries herself.

“I want to hear more about this young lady and the effect this has had on her. Medical evidence will help me.”

Judge Bright has allowed six weeks for medical evidence to be presented to him so the trial has now been adjourned to November 27 at 2pm.

He closed today’s hearing at St Albans Crown Court saying: “Ms Mileva, you entered a guilty plea in this trial so you will have credit for that.

“You have been unconditionally bailed up until now so will remain on unconditional bail.

“The trial won’t be adjourned again. I don’t want to move that date. Mr Paul’s family want to see progress.”
