The first rabbi for more than 50 years has been welcomed into one of the city’s oldest Jewish communities.
History was made at St Albans United Synagogue on Sunday, November 1 when an induction ceremony to welcome Rabbi Daniel Sturgess took place.
Performing the induction was Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis.
Also joining the 150-strong congregation were the Mayor of St Albans, Cllr Salih Gaygusuz, St Albans MP Anne Main, Dean of St Albans, Dr Jeffrey John, as well as leaders of neighbouring Jewish community and Rabbi Sturgess’ s wife, Alli.
Jeanette Grenby, member of the board of management at the synagogue, said: “We never though this day would come as we’d been waiting for it for a long time.
“We’re delighted to welcome Rabbi Daniel Sturgess and his wife – they’re a real boost to our community.
“He’s been terrific since his arrival, he’s galvanised the congregation, and there’s lots more on offer, lots more activities for youngsters and older members of the community.
“No one has a bad word to say about him.”
Both Rabbi Daniel and Alli were appointed to the joint post of rabbinical couple just over a year ago.
