Thousands of people came to have their first taste of bratwurst and duck pancakes, see Bjorn the polar bear and listen to festive music at the St Albans Christmas market launch.

This year’s Christmas market in Vintry Gardens outside the cathedral was officially opened for business on Thursday, November 26.

Calvo the juggler, the Christmas Nutkins and Bjorn the Bear entertained the crowd at the launch night and more than 50 stalls were open selling gifts, food and drink and hot food.

Cllr Salih Gaugusuz said: “It was fantastic to see so many people enjoying the opening of our third Christmas market in its wonderful location near ST Albans Cathedral.

“The Vintry Gardens are a wonderful sight now, with over 50 chalets decorated with fairy lights and greenery.

“Why not come along to buy presents or just to meet up with friends for festive food and drink? If you can visit more than once you will find that every day is different.

“Stall-holders change regularly and there are different activities for adults and children.”

Other activities at the market include a Santa’s grotto, open Tuesdays to Fridays 1pm-6pm and Saturdays 10am-6pm, Christmas decorations workshops on Fridays and face painting on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The Christmas market will be open until Sunday, December 20.

Opening times are Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesday and Fridays from 11am until 6pm, Thursdays from 11am until 8pm and Saturdays and Sundays between 10am and 6pm.
