A man has been jailed for causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Modecai Juma, 42, and of Maxwell Road in St Albans, had been driving an Uno double decker bus along St Albans Road at around 8.20am on Monday, October 20, 2014 when he crossed the carriageway and crashed with a car coming in the opposite direction, causing the bus to overturn.

There were 99 people on the bus, out of which seven suffered serious injuries and 82 slight injuries.

The woman driving the white Vauxhall Corsa it had collided with suffered serious life-changing injuries and her son, who was a passenger, suffered slight injuries.

There were a number of witnesses to the collision who had described Modecai Juma’s driving as dangerous throughout the 10 mile journey which started at Queensbury Tube Station.

He was arrested following the collision and was subsequently reported for summons to court for three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Juma has also been disqualified from driving for five years and must take an extended re-test.

PC Andrew Wild from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit investigated the case and said: “This was a serious collision in which a large number of people were injured.

"The lady driving the Corsa, who was not at fault in any way, is still suffering the effects of her injuries.”

Juma was jailed for three years today at St Albans Crown Court.
